“ A truly Talented Musician” Rocklinks

Once upon a time, in a far away land, was a man they called Nathaniel Sutton.

Born in Edmonton Alberta, Canada on September 27th, 1983, he grew up being a slave for that lovely sound called music.

While in high school, he was offered a guitar class and the light bulb above his head nearly exploded with ideas. A budding indie star was born. After a few years passed, Nathaniel felt strong enough in the way of the guitar, but wanted a greener musical pasture, so he took it upon himself and created a new challenge, He decided to learn how to play drums. He drove himself over the edge with this new instrument at his fingertips, and started playing in cover bands (“You gotta start somewhere, right?” he exclaimed). Nathaniel knew the ‘cover band situation’ was not working for him and felt his inner, more eclectic tendencies were gnawing his insides.

Nathaniel went solo and started recording ALL the songs inside his head. Incessantly, he created a vast array of songs as a “1-man-band,” and recorded all the instruments and vocals himself, becoming quite the self-contained unit. Noticing the poetic quality in his narratives, his passion was even greater and he knew this was him, inside and out, take it or leave it. He writes songs made up of stories stemming from life and imagination, metaphors jumping out in every verse.

With a style to call his own, though not too far distant relatives to Lou Barlow (Folk Implosion, Sebadoh), Eric Bachman (Crooked Fingers, Archers of Loaf) or even Tim Kasher (Cursive, The Good Life) and Isaac Brock (Modest Mouse), Nathaniel is a man with a unique throaty croon and a guitar acting as the paintbrush for his quietly yet brilliant abstract pallette.

When and how did the Band meet?

The band started from a very early age. We (Lee Zajciw and James Oldrini) Grew up together having the same influences in music and formed different bands together. We went on to form a covers band “TFX” with manager Jim Anderson, playing anything from Hendrix, The Who, to the Stereophonics!

Sean skinner joined “TFX” 2006 and from there we began to concentrate on writing and recording our own music, this brings us on to “Rebel Territory”. Last November (2007) “TFX” branched off to form a new project, “Rebel Territory” for our original material. We are now working hard to create a real buzz around us and our music!

What’s the story behind the name?

After hundreds of names thrown into the hat we could not find anything that we liked! A few weeks later, Lee came up with the name “Rebel Territory“. We all liked it, it worked and felt right plus no one else had the name!

Who are your main influences?

We have many, just to list a few…. Hendrix, The Who, Led Zeppelin, Cream, Free, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Ocean Colour Scene, The Clash, Ian Brown, The Stone Roses, Coldplay, The Police, U2, The Jam, Pearl Jam, The Stranglers, The Sex Pistols, The Verve, Happy Mondays, The Cult, Stereophonics, The Kinks, The Beatles, John Lennon, Queen, The Rolling Stones, The Doors, Wolfmother, T-Rex, David Bowie, Oasis, Lenny Kravitz, Pink Floyd…

Your views on the Music scene at the moment?

It could be better, but there is a market out there for everyone. It depends what you are into. What ever style it is, if it’s done well, we’ll probably like it.

What makes you different?

We are all good musicians and fantastic to watch live (apparently!!)

We think bringing “Old school” style – legendary solos into up-to-date, commercial tracks make us different. You just don’t see guitarists like Lee in today’s bands and we are trying to do something about it.

How did you get your first gig?

Probably through myspace, we got together with a few other bands to play The Vic Inn, Derby. That’s when we Lunched Rebel Territory.

Future Plans?

To keep plugging away and get as many people interested as possible and to keep searching for that lucky break.

What advice would you give for Bands just starting out?

Get a page on Myspace, its fantastic for networking with other bands/industry people and gets your music heard by potential fans.

What advice would you give about song writing?

Don’t leave it to long to get to that crucial hook line!

Favourite Unsigned Band at the moment?

Rebel Territory of course!!!

There was a band called “Kicks” who are in our top friends on myspace. We loved their Demo song “Pounding Hard”…but it looks like they have a label behind them now.

Any advice for people looking for Band members?

Get on the internet, watch other bands and advertise in local music shops.

Rock Links was the winner of the Gosport Innovation and Entreprenuership Business award 2008. The award was collected by Craig Jones the founder of Rocklinks.co.uk at a very fancy dinner at the Alver Bank Hotel in Gosport. Below is what the judges had to say about the catergory.

Sponsored by the Gosport Business Centre, this Award recognises businesses that have demonstrated a particularly innovative or entrepreneurial approach.

All the shortlisted entrants this year were selected based on their entrepreneurial approach to establishing and growing a small business. Two businesses particularly caught the judges’ eye, both impressing with their attitude, ambition and understanding of the key essentials required to establish and grow a successful business.  

However, there can be only one winner.  In making their final choice, the judges agreed that this particular business stood out for a number of reasons – including having understood the importance of building capacity through networks; demonstrating a willingness to learn and apply new skills; and making very significant progress in a short space of time.  Feeding back after their visits, the judges commented “Every now and then you meet an entrepreneur who has a real spark of energy, confidence and enthusiasm, and a practical approach that will ensure these essential attributes take a business forward”

We would like to thank the organisers and the Judges for a fantastic evening and for the award of course!

MUSICIANS’ SHOW OF SUPPORT FOR LOCAL ARTS ORGANISATION

This Bank Holiday weekend sees Jesters Comedy Club throw open its
doors to host Crofts, a day of performance by local artists and
musicians. Taking place on Sunday 4th May, the event aims to raise
money for local arts organisation The People’s Republic of Stokes
Croft. From mid-afternoon until the early hours of Monday morning a
mixture of bands, musicians and DJs will be performing on stage,
whilst a variety of artists and performers will also be in attendance
to add to the atmosphere.

Upbeat vibes will be the order of the day, styles of music including
funk, soul and ska. The event gets underway at 3pm with a BBQ on the
sun terrace to the sounds The El Pato Band in session – here’s hoping
for sunshine! Proceedings move inside at 7pm to start the evening’s
entertainment proper. An extensive line-up includes acts from across
the musical spectrum, ranging from acoustic Hip-Hop artist Clayton
Blizzard to party tunes courtesy of The Asbo Disco.

Heading the bill are three groups representing the finest Bristol has
to offer. The Rinky Dinks are Bristol’s first ukulele supergroup,
comprising of musicians drawn from a number of Bristol bands past and
present. The Scribes are a new-wave hip-hop four piece who have toured
all over Europe and supported luminaries such as Westwood, Roll Deep
and Foreign Beggars. Ruckus Collective are a fusion group drawing on
influences as diverse as Jazz, Funk, Hip-Hop and Rock to Reggae, Ska,
Blues and experimental Electronica. Expect things to get lively!
Tickets are available from Jesters for £5.

All money raised will be donated to The People’s Republic of Stokes
Croft. Anyone who lives nearby can’t have failed to notice the impact
this arts collective have had in the Stokes Croft area. Recent efforts
have included brightening the façade of long derelict Westmoreland
House with a number of striking murals and the implementation of
graffiti practice walls. Their activities have not gone unnoticed,
with the group received press coverage nationwide. It is hoped that
Stokes Croft can serve as an example as to how communities can claim
back their public spaces. Chris Chalkley explains:

‘Stokes Croft represents a golden opportunity to create an alternative
vision to the corporate madness that is Cabot Circus. Our unique
culture is our greatest strength, and we must fight to preserve this.

‘In Stokes Croft, there is an opportunity to create an alternative
vision for the way society could be. If we can make it work here, we
can create a template that can work throughout society. It is that
important…’
